Cruising the Sebangau National Park

Close to Palangka Raya is the unique Sebangau National Park - it is home to thousands of truly wild orangutans. They are not easy to see, and their habitat is peat swamp forest, but they can sometimes be spotted in the treetops from canoes as we pass quietly along the narrow canals crisscrossing the park. There is plenty of other wildlife, with flashes of hornbills, kingfishers, noisy proboscis monkeys, and early-morning gibbon songs.

One of the joys of my job is exploring the rivers, experiencing the wildlife in the abundant forests, meeting the people, learning about their livelihoods and then bringing guests in to appreciate their tenacity and resourcefulness. Without road access, the river is the highway, and without power, town water, or much food production, these people have sustained their lives by adapting to local resources.

Climbing into simple local canoes, the villagers take us on a journey through their backyards. Along narrow canals and across vast blackwater lakes, we spot wildlife and enjoy its peaceful timelessness.

Being largely dependent on their local environment for food, they share a feast with us consisting of river fish and forest greens. Huge river prawns are a special treat!
Wow Borneo operates the only tourist boat in the area. This is a special remote location, and we have designed a 5-day cruise to take you away from it all on a comfortable vessel with our great local guides and fantastic onboard cooks.
